Going bald is a blessing in disguise
April 4th, 2008 | Living
Just to get this out of the way, today is my birthday. I hit the ripe old age of 26 today, and it looks like these old bones is starting to shut down. As I age further into my twenties, I’ve noticed that my hairline is slowly started to recede. I’m not sure what the genetic rules for baldness are, but my father and both grandfathers have shiny domes.
So after I stopped crying about my misfortunes, I came upon a realization: Going bald is a blessing in disguise.
I see a lot middle aged men desperately clinging to whatever hair they have left with sloppy haircuts and comb-overs. More often than not, they also try to compensate for their hairloss by growing a mustache or beard. But none of that is for me. As soon as it becomes apparent that I’m kidding myself by trying to style what ever hair I have left on my head, I’m shaving it.
And since I’m a naturally frugal person, I realized there are plenty of ways for me to save money by shaving my head:
- Since I’ll be shaving my head, I won’t need to go to the hair dress every two weeks for $20 a pop. That’s an extra $520 in my pocket every year.
- I won’t need shampoo, or conditioner. Plus, I won’t need to buy any more product for my hair either.
- I can kiss my comb goodbye. That’ll probably save me a whopping $10 a year.
- My shower time will get cut down as well. But since my wife loves to use all the hot water first thing in the morning anyway, I keep my showers as short as possible to avoid get a cold blast of water first thing in the morning.
So at a minimum, going bald in my older years could save me around $600 a year. Of course, I’m going to enjoy my full head of hair while it lasts, but at least I won’t be depressed when I start seeing clumps of hair in the sink every morning.
Oh, who am I kidding. I’ll probably buy a toupée.

Yep… bald is great…. I’m 23 and have a full head of hair and I still shave mine because of the savings and convenience.
One thing to think about though… you will use more razors… and have you priced razors lately? For some reason razor prices are going up faster than tuition! It’s like $20 for 4 razors now! Ha… maybe not quite yet…. but that’s one reason why I just use an electric trimmer with no guard… but that creates a mess in the bathroom when you do it.
Just some things to think about!

I’ve thought about shaving my head, just can’t make myself do it. My wife cuts my hair, so we still save on the haircutting.
My birthday is next week. We’re all getting older!

If you are going to use trimmers then you need to be shaving your head outside. lol. Then you can just sweep it off the porch.
I think baldness comes from your mother’s dad. But I really hope not since my dad lost his hair at like age 15. I don’t want that for my son. My husband’s dad had a full head of hair the day he died, so I’m praying that I have it wrong.

Male hair loss follows the paternal line, so Mom@wideopenwallet, your kids safe!
Seb, good for you, as Monty Python tells us, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.
There is nothing worse looking hta an older man trying desperately to hang onto his hair. Tha comb over look doesn’t fool anyone and in truth it just makes them a laughing stock.
Anyway, Is this really about saving money or have you decided to check out the rumour that bald men are more sexy? YOu mean you didn’t know well know you do so et us know how much more attention you get.
Ciao

I recently buzzed my hair off. It looks a lot better. And I am saving a lot of money. Every few weeks I run clippers over my head and I’m done. This might even be cheaper than a full shave, and as far as I go, a lot safer!
Seb - good choice!
